Your park, your fun at first ever eUReka

15 May 2017

A high-octane mixture of music, art, sport and food is in store at a South Derbyshire park in the first youth event of its kind.

Those aged 11 to 19 are invited to attend eUReka, a free three-hour session offering DJ workshops, circus skills and zorb football.

There will also be drumming and acoustic music sessions, food, graffiti, face painting and body art with experts.

Organised by South Derbyshire District Council, it all takes place between 4pm and 7pm on Friday, 19 May 2017 at Swadlincote’s Eureka Park.

Graffiti art produced on the day will be used in the design of a large piece of artwork that will represent the park and can be displayed outdoors.

The schedule has been put together following consultation with the area’s young people themselves, whose feedback has helped to shape what is on offer.

Stuart Batchelor, Director of Community and Planning at the District Council, said:

“A lot of young people are regular users of Eureka Park and we wanted to make sure that we were providing engaging activities that they could enjoy.

“We hope that this, in turn, will ensure they continue to take pride in the area and help to maintain the low levels of anti-social behaviour that we currently enjoy.

“The idea of ‘eUReka’ was to really put an emphasis on the ‘UR’, or ‘your’ – this is all about us saying to young people that it’s your park, your ideas and your fun.

“We hope it will prove an inspirational event for those of all abilities and backgrounds.”

The music, DJ, circus skills and graffiti workshops will operate on a drop-in basis and be tailored to meet the needs of those taking part, making them suitable for both beginners and the more experienced.

Youngsters taking part in zorb football will be required to bring along consent forms on the day, which are available from the District Council’s offices in Civic Way, Swadlincote, or the Youth Information Shop at the town’s Rink House, in Rink Drive.
