Pest control

The pest control services provided by South Derbyshire are on a not for profit basis and therefore our priority is to provide quality first and foremost. If you require a treatment, please do not hesitate to speak to one of our Contact Centre staff and we will book you into the earliest available appointment.

What pests do the council treat for?

We provide a pest control service, both domestic and commercial, for rats, mice and most insects of public health significance. We also enforce legislation relating to infestations on land or in premises.

The South Derbyshire Pest Control Team will treat most of the every day pests found both within domestic and commercial buildings, which include the following:

  • rats
  • mice
  • wasps
  • bees (only if creating a danger to householder)
  • cockroaches

Given the specialist equipment required, we no longer treat for bedbugs. Local private sector pest control providers will be able to treat (see information on other websites below).

Unfortunately we do not undertake treatments for ants, although we do have advice leaflets on how to try and control them within your property. Please contact the general enquiry number for advice or a copy of the leaflet or find more information on our ants page.

We only treat for bees in very exceptional circumstances. In the early summer in particular many residents mistake harmless bees as being wasps and want us to destroy them. Due to the high number of visits we make when bees are wrongly identified as wasps we have now had to charge for callouts to bees, even when we do not treat. When we are called out to bees we charge the same as for a wasp treatment.

How much do treatments cost?

The following charges apply between April 2015 and March 2016.

Any treatments done outside normal hours carry a higher than normal charge.

Who qualifies for the reduced rate in the 'low income' group?

  • State retirement pension
  • Widow's pension
  • Unemployment benefit or
  • Registered disabled.

How much do commercial pest treatments cost?

Commercial charges depend on the nature and the frequency of the treatments required and your business needs. We will be pleased to provide advice and highly competitive quotes for contracts following a free site consultation visit.

How do I request a treatment?

For any general enquiries or to request an officer to undertake a treatment then please contact Tel: 01283 595795. Alternatively you can make an online request using the contact form below or you can email us on

When will an officer come out?

In most cases the officers will try to visit within three working days of receiving your call and we will try to fit it in on a day that suits you. You will be informed when you contact the above number when you can expect them to call. Unfortunately it is not possible to give exact times so it will normally be morning or afternoon.

How will I pay?

Payment can be made at the time of booking using either a debit or credit card.

If you qualify for a reduced payment then please ensure you have documentary evidence to show the officer when they call, for example a pension or benefit book.

What if I need general advice?

If you would like to speak to a pest control officer then please ring the general enquiry number Tel: 01283 595795. The officers are normally available up until 9am before they go out on visits and will endeavour to get back to you as soon as they are able to.

Service targets and historical performance information

We appreciate that our customers want treatments as quickly as possible, but that the treatments have to fit into busy lives. We will therefore try to get out to you as soon as possible or at a date to suit you. For urgent cases we can usually arrange next day or same day treatments, although this is dependant on other commitments.

We do not treat for all pests and during peaks of demand we cannot get out to all customers as quickly as everyone would like. If you would like to use a local private pest control contractor then the links below provide some further information.
